Butterfly had been asking for an American Girl doll for months. She dreamed of Kaya, slept on her floor on a pallet, and dressed as a Native American for Halloween. She was blessed with Kaya for Christmas. Unfortunately, while she loved Kaya, she realized that she didn’t feel like she could play with Kaya because really Kaya didn’t have many clothes and modern clothes looked funny on her. Butterfly, while she still wanted Kaya decided she would rather have a doll she could play with more. We went to the American Girl store nearby and she looked at all the dolls. None of them sang to her. Finally, I saw some pictures of Saige and read about her interests. I knew that Saige would be the doll for Butterfly. I showed her the pictures and told her about Saige loving art and horses- she was in love. So, Butterfly, Pumpkin Pie, and I braved the New Year’s Day crowds at the American Girl store, stood in line for a few minutes to get in and then braved the mad rush for the Girl of the Year. Butterfly was thrilled to exchange Kaya and accessories as well as an outfit she received as a gift, and her birthday money for Saige, her dog, and her painting set. It was an adventure to battle the crowds but I came home with a very happy girl…
